Vultr, a US-based cloud infrastructure company has expanded its Indian infrastructure footprint with a 20 MW AI supercluster in Chennai — the company’s largest such facility outside the United States.

The centre, powered by over 10,000 AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs, will be capable of powering large-scale AI training and inference workloads.

Speaking at a press conference here on Monday, Kevin Cochrane, Chief Marketing Officer, Vultr said that the centre is India’s largest AMD GPU cluster deployment, without revealing exact investment figures. He added that the centre will provide computing services for Indian AI start-ups, developers, digital businesses.

“India is emerging as a global centre for AI development and is moving beyond consuming AI technologies to actively building and developing AI applications for global markets. This engineering talent is a key driver of Vultr’s investment in the market,” he said.

Vultr is a privately-held cloud infrastructure provider and started its India operations in 2022. Beyond Chennai, the company operates three data centre regions in Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru and Mumbai.

1 GW target

Cochrane added that the Chennai data centre is just the beginning and the company is actively looking to scale its presence in India with a target of about 1GW of capacity in the near future. Other company executives speaking at the event suggested the possibility of reaching this capacity milestone by 2029.

During the launch, Vultr also signed an MoU with StartupTN, the nodal agency for start-ups and innovation under the Government of Tamil Nadu to extend cloud computing credits and preferential pricing to eligible start-ups across the State. Under the partnership, Vultr will provide $45,000 worth of computing credits to eligible start-ups with a 20 per cent discount.

The event also saw the presence of P Mathan Raja, Minister of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, Government of Tamil Nadu and Atul Anand, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary to Government of Tamil Nadu, IT & Digital Services Department.
