Indian investors may hold stocks across several companies yet remain concentrated in a single market. With India accounting for around 3% of global equity market capitalisation in May 2026, international investing offers a broader opportunity set. The key is understanding diversification, currency risk, investment routes and how overseas exposure fits individual financial goals.

An investor can have a portfolio spread across several Indian companies and still be exposed to a surprisingly narrow slice of the global economy. Owning different stocks may reduce dependence on individual businesses. It does little, however, to address the limits of investing in a single market.

The scale of that limitation becomes clearer when viewed against global equity markets. India's share of global market capitalisation fell to around 3% in May 2026, according to market data reported by Mint, citing Motilal Oswal. In other words, the overwhelming majority of listed equity market value lies outside India.

The figure offers a useful starting point for investors reassessing their portfolios. It does not mean that Indian equities are unattractive, or that investors should automatically shift money overseas. India's economic prospects and domestic investment opportunities remain important considerations. The question is whether a portfolio built entirely around India adequately reflects an investor's broader financial objectives.

Consider the companies and industries an investor can access through domestic stocks. Their fortunes are shaped by Indian consumer demand, interest rates, government policy and local business conditions. International markets offer exposure to businesses operating under different economic conditions, with different sources of revenue and growth. Some industries also have a much larger presence in overseas markets.

Technology is one example. Investors seeking exposure to global technology businesses may find that their domestic holdings offer a different mix of opportunities from those available in larger overseas markets. Similar considerations apply to other sectors where companies derive substantial revenue from international customers. Access to these businesses can broaden the choices available to investors, although it also introduces unfamiliar risks and valuations that require careful assessment.

Diversification, however, is more complicated than buying stocks from another country. Markets can fall together during periods of global stress. Currency movements can affect returns when overseas investments are converted back into rupees. Investors must also account for transaction costs, taxation and the rules governing the route through which they invest.

The practical question is therefore one of portfolio design. Does international exposure complement existing holdings? Is the investor comfortable with currency fluctuations? Would an overseas fund, an exchange-traded fund or another investment route suit their needs? These decisions depend on individual circumstances, investment horizons and risk tolerance. A global allocation chosen simply because foreign markets have performed well recently can create a different set of concentration problems.

The first step is understanding the opportunity set. Investors need to know what global markets offer, how they can access them from India, and what trade-offs accompany each route. That knowledge makes it easier to evaluate international exposure on its merits rather than treating it as either a necessity or a passing trend.

These questions form the starting point for the “Why Invest Outside India?”session of The Economic Times' International Investing Masterclass, on 17 October 2026. The free, 3-hour online workshop will examine the case for investing beyond India, alongside practical sessions on investment routes, ETFs and other considerations.

The session will be conducted by Neil Borate, co-founder of thefynprint, a financial guidance platform. Neil Borate was Deputy Editor at Mint, where he headed the personal finance team before starting thefynprint. Neil is a graduate in law and economics, with a postgraduate diploma in investments from the University of Birmingham, UK. He has also passed the CFA Level 1 exam. Neil started writing about personal finance in 2016 at Value Research, a mutual fund research portal. After a stint at a fintech, Neil joined Mint in 2019 as a mutual fund reporter. He was made Deputy Editor in 2022. He has also co-authored the book - The Big Bull of Dalal Street on Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, one of India's most successful investors.

For investors who have built their portfolios around domestic stocks, the exercise is worth undertaking. The aim is not to abandon a familiar market. It is to understand the wider investment universe before deciding how much of it belongs in their portfolio.
